Watchful Waiting
(Expectant Therapy)
Return to Treatment Options
Expectant, or "watch and wait" therapy may be recommended for older patients with early-stage, slow-growing cancer. During expectant therapy, the cancer will be observed and monitored for any progression while other treatments are postponed. PSA blood tests, scans, and digital rectal exams may be performed. Often times the slow progression of the cancer does not warrant further treatment. In a case such as this, the slow-growing cancer does not create complications or discomfort, allowing a man to avoid treatment for the remainder of his life. Active treatment can be started later if the cancer shows signs of growth or causes problems.
