Hormone therapy is not a cure for prostate cancer. The purpose of hormone therapy is to lower levels of testosterone, which promotes the growth of prostate cancer cells. By reducing the levels of testosterone, the cancer growth may slow and/or the prostate may shrink. Several methods may be used including orchiectomy (the surgical removal of the testicles) and hormone drugs administered monthly, or on a physician specified interval.
May be recommended if your cancer has recurred or spread beyond the prostate, or as an option prior to another therapy.

- Provides relief from symptoms
- Slows the growth of the cancer and reduces the size of the tumor
- Makes the prostate more receptive to other treatments
Possible risks and side effects:
- Reduced (or loss of) sexual desire
- Impotence
- Infertility
- Temporary hot flashes
- Breast tenderness or growth of breast tissue
- Cardiovascular problems
- Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
