Cryosurgery (also called cryotherapy or cryoablation) is sometimes used to treat localized prostate cancer by freezing it. Several hollow probes (needles) are placed through the skin between the anus and scrotum (the perineum) through which very cold gases are passed through the needles, creating ice balls that destroy the prostate gland.
Benefits and advantages:
- Minimally invasive procedure
- May not require hospital stay
- Little to no effect on patient's lifestyle and level of activity
- Recommended as treatment option for recurrent cancer
Possible risks and side effects:
- Long-term effectiveness not clinically known
- Not recommend as primary treatment for prostate cancer
- Blood in urine
- Soreness and swelling of operative site, penis and testicles
- Pain, burning, urinary urgency
- Impotence in up to 80% of men
- Urinary incontinence
